Stay and eat

Where to stay, where to eat, and what nightlife is like.

Is it better to stay in town or in the hills or beach areas?

Stay in town if you want to walk to restaurants, bars and the beach and won't mind weekend noise. Stay in the hills for ocean views, a pool and quiet, but you'll need a car or driver, and the roads up are often steep dirt. Surfers who want to be in the water at dawn do best near Maderas or Marsella.

If you stay outside town, plan dinners so you aren't driving back on dark dirt roads, or book a driver.

How Mantra helps

Mantra Vacations matches the stay to the trip: a villa in the hills for a group, a place on the sand for surfers, a room in town for a long weekend. We book it, arrange the transfers, set up a rental car if you're staying out of town, and plan the days around it.

[Whether we book hotels and rentals directly, and whether there is a fee.]

What is the nightlife like in San Juan del Sur?

Lively, and mostly along the beachfront, where open-air bars face the bay. The best-known night is Sunday Funday, a weekly pool-party crawl between hostels and bars that draws a young backpacker crowd. Tickets have been around $25 to $30. For a quieter night, the beachfront restaurants do sunset drinks and dinner.

The detail

  • Things get busiest in the December to April high season and on holiday weekends.
  • Carry small bills, and take a taxi back if you're staying outside town.
  • Never leave a drink unattended, a standard warning from the State Department.

How Mantra helps

For groups celebrating, Big Sugar is a private day from 12:00 to sunset, with an all-inclusive option: beer, seltzers, rum, sodas, fruit, ceviche and tapas.

Planning a big night out? Mantra Vacations can book your restaurant tables and event tickets as part of your trip.

Where are the best places to eat seafood and local food in San Juan del Sur?

Eat seafood on the beachfront, where restaurants serve whole fried fish, lobster and ceviche facing the sunset. For local food at local prices, try the fritanga grills and the stalls in and around the town market. Dishes to look for: gallo pinto (rice and beans), sopa de mariscos (seafood soup), grilled meats with plantains, and fresh ceviche.

The detail

[Places travelers mention most, once each is confirmed open: El Timón, Josseline's, The Fisherman at Cuban Ranch, Asados Juanita, and the town market.]

How Mantra helps

On the Blue Tour, the fish you catch becomes ceviche on the beach the same day.

The Friends Tour ends with dinner on the beach with a local family. $65 per person.

Mantra Vacations can also book restaurant tables for your stay, so you're not hunting for a table at sunset.
