Do I need to rent a 4x4 in San Juan del Sur?

No. With the new coastal highway, a regular rental car reaches the town and the beaches around it. The one exception is Playa Hermosa, where the road in still calls for a 4x4. A rental car is the easiest way to get around, and Mantra sets it up for you at the cheapest price available.

The detail

Rules of the road if you drive:

  • Nicaragua set a 50 km/h (31 mph) speed limit on all roads in June 2025, posted or not.
  • Carry your license, insurance, registration, a warning triangle and a fire extinguisher. This applies to rentals too.
  • Police checkpoints are common. Officers can hold your license until a fine is paid.
  • After an accident, don't move the car until police say so. The legal alcohol limit is 0.05%.
  • Roads outside town are dark at night, so plan longer drives for daylight.

How do surf shuttles and taxis work in San Juan del Sur?

They work, but a rental car is better: you come and go on your own terms instead of waiting on shuttle times or agreeing a taxi price for every ride. If you'd rather not drive, beach shuttles run from town to Maderas for about $5 return, and taxis are everywhere, with no meters. Mantra sets up your rental at the cheapest price available.

The detail

  • Maderas shuttle. Runs from Casa Oro in town in an open-sided truck with room for boards. Times change, so check the day before.
  • Taxis. Set the price first. Roads to some beaches are rough, and a regular taxi may not make it all the way.
  • Buses. Bright old school buses run from the market to Rivas in 45 to 60 minutes, for under a dollar. Change in Rivas for Granada, Managua or the Ometepe ferry.
  • Ride-share apps. Some work in Nicaragua. Don't plan around them in San Juan del Sur.

How fast is the Wi-Fi in San Juan del Sur for remote work?

Usually great. So many digital nomads live in San Juan del Sur that good Wi-Fi is the norm almost everywhere, from cafes in town to rentals in the hills. Home broadband from Claro averaged about 89 Mbps download across Nicaragua between April 2025 and March 2026, and mobile data about 48 Mbps.

The detail

  • Fiber is spreading. Claro announced an expansion of its fiber network in July 2026.
  • Places in the hills often use Starlink.
  • A local SIM gives you a hotspot as a backup for important calls.
